The final holidays of the year will be here before you know it. If you haven't been to the dentist this year, now's the time to schedule an appointment. If you're like most people, a trip to the dentist isn't at the top of your priority list during the holidays, but it should be. You might not realize this, but you could be setting yourself up for some problems if you don't schedule an appointment before the holidays roll around. Here are just four of the reasons why your holiday preparations should include a visit to your family dentist

Repair Cavities

If you've got a few cavities, now's the perfect time to get those repaired. The last thing you want is to have cavity pain interrupt your holidays. Unfortunately, that's exactly what can happen if you don't have your cavities repaired before the holidays. Without repairs, the cavities could develop an abscess, which could lead to intense pain. If that happens, you could end up needing emergency dental care while you're trying to entertain guests. Avoid the pain and the disruption and have your cavities repaired as soon as possible.

Remove Tartar

If you haven't had your teeth cleaned in a while, there's a good chance that you've got some tartar buildup that needs to be addressed. Tartar buildup isn't something that should be taken lightly, especially during the holidays. You might not realize this, but tartar is visible on your teeth, especially to those that are in close proximity. You don't want friends and family to see the tartar buildup on your teeth during holiday gatherings. Not only that, but tartar can also increase your risk for gingivitis, which can leave you with red, swollen gums. To alleviate those problems, visit your family dentist before the holidays arrive.

Whiten Your Teeth

If your teeth are looking a little dull, or you've got some stains that you'd like to get rid of, visit your dentist right away. The last thing you want is to have dull, stained teeth in the holiday pictures. Luckily, you can avoid that embarrassment by having your teeth whitened before the first holiday get-together. For maximum benefits, don't take the do-it-yourself approach to teeth whitening. Instead, have your family dentist provide professional results.

Utilize Your Benefits

If you have dental insurance, and you haven't been to the dentist this year, you could be wasting your benefits. Most dental benefits don't roll over into the following year. Unfortunately, that means you lose out on any benefits that you don't use. To make sure you get your money's worth, visit the dentist before the holidays arrive.
